English Monarch. Queen consort of King Edward the Confessor. Daughter of Godwine, earl of Wessex, she married Edward on January 23, 1045 to cement relations between the King and her powerful father. The marriage was a platonic one, as Edward had taken a vow of chastity. Edward may have sent her to a convent when relations with her father went sour.
