Winnie Maria Smith was the youngest of seven children born to Sarah Catherine Crumbaker and Spear Spencer Smith. Winnie was born 3 May 1892 in Schuyler, Colfax County, Nebraska. She was the only child born in Nebraska after the family moved from McLean County, Illinois about 1888. Winnie M Smith was listed with her family on the family farm on the 1900 census in Colfax County near Leigh at the age of 8; her birth date was given as May 1892. She was again listed with her parents on the 1910 census in Boone County when she was 17. Winnie was the only child listed with her parents on the farm in Boone County on the 1920 census. Winnie was 27 and her parents were in their 70s. Winnie’s father died in 1921. Winnie and a much older sister, Leonie were named on the 1930 census with Winnie’s mother in Albion, Boone County, Nebraska; Winnie was 38 and employed as a telephone operator. Winnie’s mother died in Albion in 1937. Winnie was enumerated as the head of household on the 1940 census in Albion with her older sister, Leonie. Winnie was a telephone operator for Continental Telephone Company for 29 years. She was active in the Women’s Club and she served as financial secretary for the United Methodist Church. Winnie never married and she had no children.

Winnie Maria Smith died 27 July 1976 at the Boone County Hospital in Albion, Nebraska. She was 84 years of age. She was interred at Rose Hill Cemetery in Albion where her parents had been interred.
