Jabez a resident of Berkley, Bristol County, Provice of Massachusetts Bay married, November 19, 1774 at Taunton, in the same County and Province, Hannah Ball by whom he had at least 6 and possibly 7 children (all sons): Joseph (b. 1775), William (b. 1781) Jabez, John (b. 1785), Samuel (b. 1788) and Cyrus (b. 1792).

In January 1776, Jabez enlisted into Captain Oliver Soper's Company, Colonel Joseph Reed's Massachusetts Regiment. They marched from Dorchester, Massachusetts to New York. On serving his time out he was discharged.

On January 16, 1777, Jabez a resident of Taunton, Massachusetts enlisted at and for Taunton for 3 years in Captain James Cooper's 4th Company, Colonel Gamaliel Bradford's 14th Massachusetts Regiment of the Continental Line. The Regiment marched to Bennington, Vermont and beyond. During this enlistment, Jabez was at the taking of British Gneral John Burgoyne and his Army at Saratoga in October, 1777. After moving south he wintered with his Regiment at the Valley Forge Huts. He was in the Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey, June 28, 1778. After serving his time out, he was honorably discharged at West Point, January 16, 1780.

In June 1780, Jabez entered, as a Private for Taunton, the service to reinforce the Continental Army for six months. He arrived at Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, where he was entered on the rolls as enlisting, July 9, 1780. He marched to camp, July 10, 1780 under the command of Captain Daniel Shays. At the time of this enlistment, Jabez was described as being 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches tall, both light and dark in complexion, and with brown or dark and light hair. It was also stated at that time that he was born in and a resident of Taunton. He joined the Army in Captain James Cooper's Company, Colonel Gamaliel Bradford's (14th) Regiment at their Huts near West Point, served his time there and was honorably discharged, December 4, 1780, including 10 days (200 miles) travel home.

On February or March 4th, 1781, Jabez enlisted as a Private for the town of Bridgewater for 3 years in Captain Jonathan Maynard's (6th) Company, Lieutenant Colonel John Brooks 7th Massachusetts Regiment. Jabel remained in Captain Maynard's Company through Novembr 1782 and then he joined Captain Nathaniel C. Allen's (8th) Company of the same Regiment. By May, 1783, Captain Allen's Company was in the 4th Massachusetts Regiment. In May and June, 1783, Jabez was in the boat service with the Quartermaster General and in July through September the same year he was in the Quartermaster General's Service. He was discharged from this enlistment at West Pont on November 20, 1783.

Jabez and his family moved to Woodford, Bennington County, Massachusetts sometime before 1800 when, as a freeman of the town, he attended the meeting held for the election of State officers. In the taking of the 1800 US Census in Woodford, he was enumerated as the head of a family with 1 male and 1 female of the age of 45 years or above, 2 males 10 to 16 and 3 males under 10.

On March 26, 1818, in his application for a Military Pension, Jabez declared his occupation as being a Collier. In some of the Rolls of his military service earlier, he was described as being either a laborer or farmer.
