Raymond Nelson Andes died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, in the Bridgewater Retirement Home after a struggle with pneumonia. Dr. Andes was a sixth generation son of the Valley where he lived all his 86 years except for a brief hiatus to attend graduate school in Chapel Hill, N.C.
After undergraduate studies at Bridgewater in the early 1940s, he received a Ph.D. in Romance Languages from the University of North Carolina, where he met his "esposa," Virginia Rimmer. They were invited back to Bridgewater College for teaching positions in French and Spanish, respectively, and Dr. Andes became chair of the Department of Foreign Languages. He retired 38 years later, in 1983, serving throughout as department chair. Late in his career, he took great pleasure in teaching many children of his first students. Although respected for his rigorous grading, Dr. Andes was loved for providing a fatherly ear and good counsel to students in that era before professional counselors became fashionable. He encouraged students to study abroad and to seek intercultural understanding through travel and earnest efforts at communication. The French Club flourished under his leadership, enjoying many trips to art museums and French church services in Washington, D.C. Former students who have forgotten how to recite "ll pleure dans mon coeur comme il pleut sur la ville" may well remember how to sing "Aupres de ma blonde" with gusto.
Dr. Andes traveled five times to Europe to study literature, perfect his accent, and enjoy diverse cultures. One such trip was on a Fulbright scholarship. A three-month excursion with his wife and children traversed seven countries in a tiny Renault Dauphine and changed the futures of everyone in the family. On his last trip he met old friends, attended the 50th anniversary of the American Association of Teachers of French (where he met Jacques Chirac), and visited his first grandchild, born shortly before in Grenoble, France.
A member of several professional organizations, and numerous college committees, Dr. Andes also served as Visiting Professor at Wake Forest University for two summers. He was an active member of the Antioch United Church of Christ, originally pastored by his father, and served on several commissions of that denomination.
In retirement, and after moving to the Bridgewater Retirement Home in 1990, the Andes continued their community involvement. After Virginia's sudden death in 2001, Dr. Andes began to decline in health. He is survived by two children, Linda, of Longmont, Colo., and Roy, of Helena, Mont.; and by two grandchildren, Haydee G. Meixl and Pierre Georges. His surviving siblings include Rev. William J. Andes, Mrs. Clarene Harding, and the Rev. Mark Andes.
A brief graveside service will be at Antioch UCC Church at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 1. A memorial service and sharing of anecdotes will follow at 5 p.m. in Cole Hall at Bridgewater College.
