Dr. William J. "Bill" Andes
ELON - Dr. William J. "Bill" Andes , 93, of Elon died at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill on Monday, January 26, 2009, at 10:45 a.m.
A native of Mt. Clinton, Va., he was the husband of the late Carey E. Atkins Andes and Lucile Stone Andes , who survives, and the son of Alfred Wellons Andes and Minnie Bowman Andes , both deceased. He was a retired ordained minister with the United Church of Christ and was a member and Pastor Emeritus of Elon Community Church.
He graduated from Elon College in 1935 and was ordained as a minister that same year. He received the Bachelor of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School in 1941 and an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Elon College in 1958.
He served as pastor of Happy Home Christian Church in Ruffin from 1938 to 1945, Hank's Chapel Congregational Christian Church in Pittsboro from 1938 to 1941, Pfafftown Congregational Christian Church and Parkway Christian Church in Winston-Salem from 1945 to 1954, and Elon Community Church from 1954 to 1966. He was Conference Minister of the Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ from 1966 to 1980.
In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include his son, Dr. David A. Andes, and wife, Karen Lewis, of Elon; stepson, Dr. Woody Stone, and wife, Barbara, of Hendersonville, N.C.; a sister, Mrs. Clarene Andes Harding, of Harrisonburg, Va.; a brother, Rev. Mark Andes , and wife, Catherine, of Burlington; two grandchildren, Matt and Juli Krueger-Andes; and four stepgrandchildren, Jordan and Mark Stone and Rhett and Sam Huffman.
A memorial service will be conducted at Elon Community Church on Thursday, January 29, 2009, at 10 a.m. by Dr. Dan Kuhn. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Parish House of Elon Community Church on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Elon Community Church Building Fund, 271 N. Williamson Ave., Elon, N.C. 27244, or the Rev. Dr. William J. Andes Endowed Scholarship, Office of Financial Planning, 2725 Campus Box, Elon, N.C. 27244.
