Mable Elliott Carpenter, age 90, of Tuscumbia, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010.

Her family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Mable's home, 806 E. Third St., Tuscumbia. Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, of Tuscumbia, with the Rev. Barrett Long officiating. Burial will follow in Colbert Memorial Gardens. Her body will be placed in the church sanctuary to lie in state at noon.

Mrs. Carpenter was a member of First Baptist Church, of Tuscumbia. She was a teacher in Tuscumbia City School System for 31 years, was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Academy of Life Long Learning and served on the board of directors of Valley Credit Union.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar George Carpenter; grandson, Andrew Elliott Carpenter; and eight siblings.

She is survived by her son, George Elliott Carpenter and Sandra; grandchildren, Anna Carpenter Soph and husband, Mike; great-grandchildren, Kate and Andrew.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Andrew Carpenter Memorial Scholarship, Alumni Scholarship Program, University of Alabama, P.O. Box 861928, Tuscaloosa AL 35486 or the First Baptist Church of Tuscumbia.

Morrison Funeral Home, of Tuscumbia, is directing.
