Darwin Nelson was born in New York on May 16, 1835 to George Nelson and Mary (Cogswell) Nelson.
At a young age him and his family moved to Michigan. Following in his father's footsteps he became a farmer.
He married Lydia Jane Walker on July 4, 1859 in Washtenaw County, Michigan and together they had five children, Charles Sheldon (1861), George (1867 - 1899), Phoebe Jane (1867 - 1925 married Stanley Torentovitsch), John Darwin, and Mary (1876 - 1907 married Harry Lee Haywood) Nelson.
On October 27, 1914 he died at the age of 79.
