She was born February 23, 1916 to Emil and Elisabeth Herd, in a sod house near Glasgow, MT. The family came west to Everett, WA in 1919 where she grew up and attended Everett schools. During her teen years, the family moved to Marysville where she met her first husband, Dee Barnhart, at a dance in the community hall. She was married at age 19.
In 1947, Dee and Marie moved to Snohomish where she was active in community affairs including American Legion and VFW auxiliaries, president of the PTA, and den mother.
