Mary Polly Lockhart was born in Hampshire Co Virginia (now WVA). Her father, Byrd Lockhart, moved the family from Virginia to Ohio, where they appear on the 1810 census in Washington (now Muskingum) County, Ohio.
It's here, in 1808, that Mary Lockhart is wed to Robert Briggs; and her brother Andrew Lockhart is wed in 1810 to Robert's sister Esther Briggs. However, within a couple of years, they leave Ohio, along with the Lockharts and other members of their extended families, for settlements in the newly opened Northwest Territory, in an area designated to become the state of Illinois.
Almost upon arrival, in the spring of 1813, several of the men have enlisted for military service in the War of 1812; having secured refuge for their families at Fort Russell, just outside of Edwardsville, near Cahokia Creek in Madison County.
During this time, one-third of the Illinois Territory's population lived in Madison County, in or near one of the 26 forts or blockhouses. The Illinois government was seated in Madison County, as was the military - at Fort Russell - which also served, as headquarters for the Rangers, when they were formed in 1813.
