Union Vet Dies

Martin Baal, 86, a veteran of the Union Forces of the Civil War, died at his home, 904 Davis Avenue, Saturday morning at 7:30 o’clock. Mr. Baal had been ill for several months. Funeral services will be conducted at the home Monday afternoon at 2:30 and burial will be made in Linwood Cemetery where full military honors will be paid the veteran.

Mr. Baal was born Aug. 14, 1843 at Pittsburgh, Pa. When he was 12 years old his family came west to Iowa and settled on settled on a farm at Sherrill. He was residing on his parents’ farm when in 1862, when 19 years old, he enlisted in the Twenty-first Iowa Infantry. He had been in the army nearly a year and had participated in many engagements without being wounded, when on May 17, 1863, in the battle at Black River Bridge, he was carried off the field wounded. A bullet had entered his right foot and the army surgeons found it necessary to amputate the foot at the ankle.

Because of his wounds he was physically unfit for further military service and was honorably discharged in September, 1863. Discharged from the army he came to Dubuque and became a cigar maker. For many years he operated a cigar factory here and 40 years ago he retired from active business.

He had always taken a prominent part in veteran affairs and was a member of the Lookout Post of the G. A. R., now disbanded because of the death of so many of its members. During his many years of residence in Dubuque, Mr. Baal became widely known and his honesty and integrity won him the respect and friendship of a large number of his fellow citizens.

He was married Oct. 3, 1873 to Miss Mary Hoerner. He is survived by his wife; three sons, A. F., Dubuque: John A., Des Moines, and D. J., Chicago; and four grandchildren.
