William Bringhurst Harper was the sixth child and third son of Charles Alfred Harper and Lavina Wollerton Dilworth Harper. His parents were Pennsylvania Quakers who immigrated to Utah in 1847 after joining the Mormon Church. William was the first child in their large family to be born after the westward migration.

William was named for his uncle William Bringhurst, the husband of his mother's sister. Charles Alfred and the elder William had taken their families across the plains together, and each named a son after the other family's patriarch: William Bringhurst Harper and Charles Harper Bringhurst.

William died at two years of age in 1853. Family lore suggests he died of "snakebite," but no affirmative records exist to either prove or disprove that theory.
