Susan, the 12th of 14 children, was born in Fullarton Township to William Trethrake and Eliza Rowe. The family moved to the United States in the early 1870's. Susan was a Dressmaker and married Selin D Whitaker on the 4th of September 1890 in Calhoun, Michigan. They settled in Long Beach, California in 1897.

Susan's husband Selin Whitaker, a Veteran of the Civil War, was born on the 20th of January 1844 in Bath, Steuben County, New York. He enlisted in 1861 at the age of 17 and served with the Second Cavalry until his discharge on the 11 May 1863. He died on the 9th of January 1917 in Long Beach.
