Author, educator, and poet. She was one of the founders of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She also served as editor of the "American Monthly Magazine" and of many fugitive poems, as well as noted for her biography of Robert R. Livingston.

Ellen was the daughter of John Jay Hardin and Sarah Ellen Smith Walworth. She married Mansfield Tracy Walworth whom she later divorced. Together, they had eight children. Her namesake daughter, Ellen Hardin Walworth, was also an author.
