Brayton Man killed as Car Hits Bridge

Thorvald C. Nelson, 41, Brayton World War II veteran, died at 5:45 this morning at the Atlantic Memorial Hospital from injuries suffered about 1 o'clock last night when the car he was driving crashed into the 'Botna river bridge on U. S. 71 near Exira. He suffered a skull fracture, two severe skull lacerations, abdominal injuries and mulitple bruises. Nelson was traveling south on 71 when his car crashed into a concrete pier on the northwest corner of the span. The concrete pier was powdered by the impact and pieces of concrete showered the bridge. The steel bridge railings were driven through the motor, Sheriff Glen McLaughlin of Audubon county reported. The 1951 Chevorlet coach driven by Nelson was demolished. The injured man was found by passing motorists shortly after the crash and amoung the first to arrive on the scene were Everett Brown, Mim and Gail Johnson and Arthur Hansen of Brayton, who were in route home from the fair at Audubon. Mr. Nelson, the son of Nels B. and Karen Andersen Nelson, was bor at Brayton Aug. 2, 1910 and had lived there all of his life. He was graduated from the Atlantic High School in 1929 and had been working at a produce station in Hamlin. He served in the army from May 2, 1942 until November, 1946 and was a member of the Brayton American Legion. Surviving are three brothers Lars Nelson, Wiota, Walter (Ted) Nelson of Adair and Harold Nelson of Brayton, with whom he made his home; a sister Mrs Howard Crisman of Anita and three nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Miss Rica Nelson, who died June 2, 1947. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2o'clock at the roland, Peacock & Baxter funeral home, the Rev. Homer Larsen officiating. They Brayton American Legion will have charge of military honors. THe remains will be at the funeral home until the servic hour and interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.
