John was born July 14, 1791, in New York. He went to Canada with his family when he was about 5 years of age.

Some years later he married Mary Peters, born July 30, 1801. It isn't known when they were wed, but they had three children - two girls and a boy. Apparently they were later divorced, Mary taking John's brother James as her second husband.

John took Sarah Eliza Hurley as his second wife in 1824. She was the daughter Joseph Hurley and Sarah Ann Hurd (who was his fathers second wife at the time). Sally was born August 5, 1807. John's children from his first marriage apparently remained with him.

John and Sarah produced 8 children while living in the Wilton area. John, Sarah and their family moved to Meaford, Ontario in 1849. The town borders on Georgian Bay, a part of Lake Huron. He bought 300 acres of land in the seventh concession of St. Vincent township, just south of and bordering on the Big Head river. The Burley farm was about 4 miles South West of Meaford. John paid "£225 of lawful money of Canada" for the property. The deed describes him as being from "the township of Kingstone, County of Frontenac in the Midland district and Province of Canada, Yeoman." John's son Nathaniel had a blacksmith shop on the farm, which he eventually moved to Meaford. In the early 1860's he went into business as a grain buyer and built a large storehouse there.

In 1854 the farm was divided among the five sons, John keeping 50 acres for himself. Then in 1860 John sold 49 acres to son Allison, keeping only an acre of the original property.

There is a cemetery plot on the farm, and several Burleys are buried here. James who died at age 10 is here, as is Allison's infant son Lambert. It is believed John and Sarah are buried here too, but there are no markers. John died August 19, 1864 and Sarah passed away one month later, September 18, 1864.
