Richard B. Protexter, son of Bruce and Lucille (Wood) Protexter was born February 10, 1930 in Clark, SD. He graduated from Clark High School with the class of 1948. He then attended Northern State College. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1952 serving his country until 1954.

He was united in marriage to Jeannette Warkenthien on May 31, 1953 in the Congregational Church in Clark. He returned to college, graduating in 1955. He began employment with Howard Bastian Insurance from 1955-1968. He then became the Executive Director of the Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce from 1968-1980, during this time was when the Aberdeen Industrial Park was developed. From 1980-1990, he owned and operated Aberdeen Coffee Service. He also co-owned a business, "Bike-Ways Cycle Center" from 1975-1985. Dick retired in 1990. Dick enjoyed working and visiting with people so in 1991, he began working half days at Dakota Outdoors helping in sales for 20 years.

Dick was a huge NSU sports fan. In the past, the time he spent at their Richmond Lake cabin with his family was always relaxing for him. He read the Aberdeen American News daily cover to cover. He enjoyed tinkering around the house, but loved to be around people every chance he had. In the fall, he could be found pheasant hunting with his group of friends and family and never missed making his annual batch of beet pickles.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and past President of the congregation. He was also a member of the Sertoma Club. He was a past Jaycee President, Chairman of SD Chamber Executives and President of NSU Alumni, where he served as King of the Gyps in 1967.
