Obituary of William A. Douglass from Holton Recorder, February 27, 1919 (Denison Department), Holton KS
We were again reminded of the uncertainty of life Friday evening, when the sad news of the sudden death of W. A. Douglass came over the telephone. Mr. Douglass was almost ready to go to the school house after his grandson, when he collapsed and his death followed soon after. Mr. Douglass was one of the pioneers here and was known to almost everyone for miles around, as he has been active as a stock buyer for many years. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Millen, his pastor, and burial was made in the Denison Cemetery.
William Andrew Douglass, son of John and Mary Douglass, was born in Ritchie County, West Virginia, March 8 1841, and died at his home near Denison, Kansas, February 21, 1919, aged 77 years, 11 months and 18 days. In 1851 his father and family moved to Buchanan County, Mo. The trip was made by steamboat from Parkersburg, West VA. to St. Louis, MO., this being before the day of the railroads in the western country. Mr. Douglass passed through the hard pioneer days, as a boy and a young man. When the Civil war broke out, he cast his lot with the Union cause. During a part of his 20th year, the first year of the war, he was attached to the 16th Illinois Inf. as a teamster and later in April, 1862, he enlisted in Co. A., 4th MO Cavalry, and served in this unit for 3 years. Was severely wounded on Aug 3, 1863, near Ft. Scott, Kansas. He participated in various battles and skirmishes in Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas and was finally mustered out in the latter part of 1864 in St. Louis, MO.
He sought enlistment again, but was rejected on account of disability received in service. He was married February 22, 1866, to Miss Elizabeth McConnell, in Buchanan County, MO. To this union 6 children were born, Rev. A.C. Douglass of Biggsville, Illinois;, Joseph R. Douglass of Roberts, Idaho, Mrs Cora B. Glass of Corona, Calif. John M. and Winifred of Denison. One daughter died in infancy. a grandniece, Miss Josie Preston Ramey, was taken into the family circle and brought to womanhood and is among those who mourn his death. The wife and mother passed to her eternal home 10 years ago, Dec. 13, 1908.
In March, 1876, the family moved to this community and here Mr. Douglass has led an active life to the day of his death.
He united with the United Presbyterian Church of Denison, KS. by profession of his faith in Christ, at the time of the organization in 1881, and remained in full communion ever since. In addition to those already named, of immediate relatives, are 22 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Catherine Douglass of Colony, Kansas, besides a number of nieces and nephews who mourn his death.
