Rev. Brand was born Friedrich Georg Oscar Herman Brand or Brandt to parents Rev. Peter Brandt/Brand and Anna Wilhelmina Hein. When Rev. Peter Brand emigrated in 1857 his name was Brandt but he quickly adopted the Americanized verson of Brand. Frederick lived with his family in New York, Washington D.C. and then Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Concordia Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri in 1886. He married Emma Louise Thieme November 15, 1887 in Allen County, Indiana. Rev. Brand served Lutheran congregations in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 1886-1903, Springfield, Illinois 1903- 1920. He also became Vice President of the Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod and Director for Missions, visiting China and India. He and his wife had five children, four survived.
