Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the Union Army in Company D, 123d New York Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on May 3, 1863 at Chancellorsville, Virginia. His citation reads "Was severely wounded by a gunshot to his left arm, went half a mile to the rear but insisted on returning to his company and continued to fight bravely until he became exhausted from the loss of blood and was compelled to retire from the field."
