Obituary of John Madden
Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee? 0 that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until they wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time and remember me.
Brother John Madden was born June 6, 1890 and passed from this life July 2, 1972. His stay on earth 82 years and 24 days. He was the son of Peter & Jane Neece Madden and was from a family of
18 children all deceased except one sister Cora Collins of Van, Kentucky. Early in life he chose for his help mate Sister Abbie Combs and to this union were born 12 children. They have three daughters deceased: Ethel and Bethel Lee Madden and Edith Madden Francis. The children that are living: Kerney Madden, Temple Texas - Henry Ford Madden, Isom, Ky. - Orpha Langford, Ermine, Ky. - Mrs, Arzella Gibson, Elcahon, Calif., Mrs. Nenniva McKinney, Taylor, Mich. - Mrs. Glauda Stoman, San Diego, Calif. - Mrs. Nassarita Morsen, Melvindale, Michigan. 32 grand-children and 19 great-grandchildren. He leaves all his children. His loving companion, grand and great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, sister, and brothers and sisters in the Old Regular Baptist Church besides a host of friends and relations.
Brother John joined the Little Daniel Regular Baptist Church August 15, 1937 and was baptized Sept. 11, 1937 and was ordained a Deacon August 11, 1938 and served faithfully and humbly until death. He was a brave soldier he never swerved to the right nor left, regardless how great the task was but trusting in his heavenly father to deliver him to help hold up the old Regular Baptist faith and practice and order and we now feel he is resting from his labor and his
works will follow after him.
Away from his home and the friends of his youth
He hastened the herald of mercy and truth
For the love of the Lord
and to seek for the lost
Soon, alas! was his fall,
for he died at his post.
He wept not himself that his warfare was done
A battle was fought, the victory was won
But he whispered to those that his heart clung to most
Tell my brethren for me that I died at my post.
Victorious was the fall, for he rose as he fell
With Jesus his Master in glory to dwell
He has passed o'er the stream and has reached the bright coast
For he fell like a martyr, he died at his post.
And can we the words of his exit forget?
Oh, no, they are fresh in my memory yet.
An example so bright shall never be lost
We will fall in the work, we will die at our post.
