Henry E. Gunder was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. As an adult he was living in Fairfield County, Ohio, and it was from there that he served his country as a private in the War of 1812. In 1834 he sold his farm in Good Hope, Hocking County, Ohio, and with his family moved to the Chesterfield area. Henry's wife Elizabeth Sisco/Francisco was born September 1792 in Fairmont, Virginia (now West Virginia). The couple had four children: Daniel,born 1825, who married Elizabeth Hughel, daughter of Ephraim and Susannah Lowman Hughel; Jane, born 1828, who married Curran Beall; Henry, born 1829, who married Louisa Cotton; and Lovina, born 1832, who married James Humphrey. The parents Henry and Elizabeth died October 18, 1864, and September 8, 1858, respectively. They are buried here at the Otterbein along with their daughters Jane Gunder Beall, who died in 1869, and Lovina Gunder Humphrey, who died in July 17, 1851. Henry and Elizabeth's sons Daniel and Henry around 1867 moved with their wives and children to Fairmont, Illinois.
