Shelby County Herald, Shelbyville, Shelby, MIssouri, Wednesday, June 7, 1922, page 1.
Funeral services for Bernard Vanderen, who died last Tuesday at the home of his sister, Mrs. Ellen Perry, near Kellerville, were held at the Perry home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. F.M. Branic and burial was made in the I.O.O.F. cemetery in Shelbyville.
Mr. Vanderen had been in poor health for some time and recently suffered a paralytic stroke. He was born in Harrison County, Ky., March 16, 1835, and was in his 88th year. He came to Marion County, Mo., with his parents in 1843, coming to Shelby County a year later. He was one of a number of emigrants who left here in 1862 for California, driving ox teams. Twelve years later he went to Texas, where he remained for 28 years, returning to this county in 1902, and has since made his home with his sister. He was never married.
Besides the sister mentioned above, another sister, Mrs. Jennie Leonard, of Cressen, Texas, and one brother, Joseph Vanderen, of this county, also survive.
Deceased was a member of the Christian church, having placed his membership at Berea in 1910 under the ministry of Rev. L.C. Mauck.
