Zip was born in 1858 in Limestone Co., AL to Thomas Gilbert and Lucetta Smith. His middle name is widely believed to "Lonzipus," but in the 1860 census, the name looks like "Zanzipus." Either way, he went by "Zip." (I'm putting Lonzipus as his middle for search purposes since that what most family files seem to contain and I want them to be able to find him.)

Information from Zip's great great grandson says that the Zip was originally buried somewhere else in Texas, but after his wife died and was buried in Colorado City, his body was moved next to her. He also does not know where the family got the initials "R.A." that are on his tombstone.
