Thomas Gilbert was the eldest son of Cary Gilbert and Eunice Chandler of Newberry County, SC where he was born in 1823. In about 1828, Cary and Eunice moved to Giles County, TN in south-central Tennessee where numerous other Newberry County families would eventually settle. In addition, Thomas' grandfather Thomas Gilbert and his uncle David Gilbert would settled right across the state line in Limestone Co., AL.

Thomas married first, Sarah Edmundson, daughter of John S. Edmundson and Elizabeth Reagin. They had one son, John E. Gilbert born in September of 1842. Sarah died just a few months later and is buried in the Old Gilbert Cemetery in Giles County. In 1850, son John was living with his grandfather John Edmundson for some reason, but in 1860, he was living with his father and step-mother in Alabama.

Thomas married second Lucetta Smith and settled in Limestone County where they would have 11 children. Sometime between when the 1880 census was taken in Alabama and 1884 when Lucetta died, the family moved to Texas.
