Russell Wayne Smith was born 14 April 1922 near Dayton; he was a son of Amos and Della Fleck Smith.
He served with the U.S. Army in World War II, eventually earning a Bronze Star for his actions. He was a member of the 104th Infantry Div., the Timberwolves. On 2 April 1945, it was reported that he was killed in action 25 Feb 1945 by enemy sniper fire while on patrol near a captured castle in western Germany.
He earned the rank of Staff Sargent prior to his death in combat.
