Irene BAKER

Irene BAKER, 98, of Fairfield, formerly of Richland, died early Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, at SunnyBrook Living Care Center in Fairfield.

Mrs. BAKER was born May 29, 1913, in Packwood, the daughter of John and Cordelia Scearcy Conger. She married Clarence Knopp, and they later divorced. She married Bernard BAKER July 28, 1936. He died in 1953.

Mrs. BAKER was a 1931 graduate of Packwood High School. She lived on a farm north of Richland for 40 years. She raised livestock and chickens, tended a huge garden and had a variety of pets. She opened her home to her mother and sister for many years. She retired from the farm in 1976 and built a home in Richland, where she resided until entering the care center in 2003.

Mrs. BAKER was a member of Richland United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed cooking for family, gardening and nurturing flowers.

Survivors include one son & spouse of Fairfield; four daughters, One & spouse of Liberty Center; one of Ollie; one & spouse of Coralville; & one & spouse of Paris, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Pearl Beach; one brother, Carl Conger; one son-in-law, Carl Underwood; and one grandchild.

A service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Richland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kim Gates officiating. Burial will be in Richland Friends Cemetery.

Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorials to Richland United Methodist Church, Richland Public Library or Hospice Compassus may be left at the church or may be mailed to the family at 26244 320th St., Ollie 52576.
