NATCHEZ — Services for Ann Stevens Calcote, 93, of Natchez, who died Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, at Natchez Regional Medical Center after a brief illness, will be at 11 a.m. today at Laird Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ed Temple officiating.
Burial will follow at the Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Calcote was born March 19, 1918, in Meadville, the daughter of Lynn and Nannie Haley Stevens. She was a graduate of Natchez High School and Natchez Business College. She and her husband were employed by Pascagoula Naval Shipyard building ships for the U.S. Navy during World War II. Upon returning to Natchez, they owned and operated Calcote's Grocery. She later worked at Ketchings Stationers and Henderson, Noble and Hicks Insurance.
For a number of years, Mrs. Calcote served with the youth program at First Baptist Church before moving to attend the New Orleans Baptist Seminary, earning a graduate degree in Christian education. She subsequently served as director of Christian education in Methodist churches in New Orleans, Eldorado, Ark., and Texarkana, Ark., before returning to Natchez where she operated a Christian gift store.
Mrs. Calcote later worked as an eligibility counselor with the food stamp office. Throughout her life, she was an avid bridge player. After retirement, she attended Jefferson Street Methodist Church and continued to follow her life's passion of helping others by establishing Roselawn Retreat. She was able to continue to oversee the retreat and lived alone until her death, thanks in large part to the kind assistance of her nephew, Vernon Stevens and granddaughter, Minda Calcote.
Without a doubt, her life was characterized by following Jesus' admonition to Peter, "Tend my sheep."
Mrs. Calcote was preceded in death by one son, Gaylord Stevens Calcote; one grandson, Will Calcote; and one brother, Vernon Ray Stevens Sr.
Survivors include two sons, John Calcote of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. and Dr. Lynn Calcote of Jefferson City, Mo.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Vernon Stevens, Derrick Calcote, John Lee Calcote, Robert Letto, Jimmy Allgood and Bryant Reed
