Lonnie Anderson passed from this world Friday, December 9, 2011 at 5:10 pm in Ardmore, Oklahoma to be with the Lord and to enjoy His eternal fellowship. Lonnie was born the second youngest of eight children on Thursday, September 30, 1920, eight miles northeast of Durant, Oklahoma to Jack and Rebecca (McMillan) Anderson. He married Jane O'Donley on Monday, December 23, 1940.
He entered the U.S. Army April 20, 1944 and was released with an honorable discharge March 23, 1946. He spent his time in service as a supply clerk in Co B 30th Inf. in France and Germany. He has told many war stories about when he was enlisted and has several honors and metals to prove it.
Upon separation from the Army he began the farm and ranch business which he pursued until 1956 when the drought that year forced him out of the cattle business and began service station management and finally his own business later where he had the station on the corner of Fifth and main street in Durant. During his 30 years there he made numerous friends and acquaintances who still remember the old 1956 Chevrolet pickup that set by the station which has been restored and is shown in car shows all over the area. Lonnie was a good mechanic and champion piddler. He also loved swimming when he was younger and fishing later in life. He went deer hunting in the eastern hills of Oklahoma with his "hunting" buddies but would usually fish in Little River when there. He never killed a deer in all those years but he never missed going to the "deer woods" for a good time with the guys and his long time friend Preston Sampson who was also a band member when they played country music together. Lonnie played a number three wash tub as a bass. They made some good music at the old country dances they had in the old days. He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church, American Legion, Odd Fellows Lodge, all in Durant, Oklahoma and was a member of the Board of Directors of Pleasant Hill Cemetery and was in charge of maintenance there for a season.
He is survived by his former wife Jane of Durant; son, Bobby Anderson and wife Carolyn of Durant, Oklahoma; daughter, Linda and husband Bill Morgan of Elk Grove, California; grandson, Mike Wright and wife Tina of Ludlow, Massachusetts; step-grandsons, Chris Haworth and wife Dee Ann of Utica, Oklahoma and Kelly Haworth and wife Tammie of Norman Oklahoma; 5 great grandsons, and 2 great granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents J.J and Beckie Anderson; seven siblings, four brothers and three sisters.
Family Hour will be from 6:30-7:30 P.M. Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at Holmes~Coffey~Murray Funeral Home in Durant, Oklahoma. Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at the Grace Baptist Church with Rev. Anthony Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Armstrong, Oklahoma where most of his family who have passed are now at rest. Serving as pallbearers will be Steve Dow, Justin Dow, Randy Anderson, Kelly Anderson, Chris Haworth, Kelly Haworth, and Mike Wright. Honorary Pallbearers will be Preston Sampson, Ted Sampson, Sid Lewis, Jon Roberts, John Andrew, and Mike Morrison.
