Gabriel Gonzáles, age 89, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2002, at his home in San Antonio, NM.
Gabriel was born on March 6, 1913 to Melecio and Amada (Gonzáles) Gonzáles in Bosquecito, NM and grew up in San Pedro, NM.
Gabriel married his wife, Mary Confa Harada in Socorro County and spent his married life in San Antonio, NM.
Gabriel worked in the Tokay and Carthage, NM coal mines during his younger years and went to work for the Bureau of Reclamation in 1952 and retired on December 31, 1974. During the mid fifties, he transferred to Belen with the Bureau for a couple of years before transferring back to Socorro and continued to make his permanent home in San Antonio.
Gabriel loved sports and "deer hunting" with his sons, but baseball was his favorite sport. Gabriel played up and down the Rio Grande Valley during his younger days. Gabriel was a very good pitcher and later his son, John and his great-grandson, Kyle also became good pitchers. Gabriel enjoyed watching his favorite team, the Dodgers, on TV.
Gabriel was very interested in mechanics and working around automobiles and doing home projects. Gabriel was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary and his parents. Gabriel is survived by his daughters, Amada Gallegos and her husband, Dennis and Stella Piccinini and her husband, Bill of Socorro, NM, sons, Melecio and his wife, Terri of Socorro County, NM and John and his wife, Linda of Queen Creek, AZ; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A Rosary will be recited on Friday, March 8, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at the San Antonio Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 9, 2002 at 12:00 p.m. at the San Antonio Catholic Church with Father Edward Domme as Celebrant. Interment will be in the San Antonio Cemetery. Pallbearers are Dennis Gallegos Jr., Charles Gallegos, Matthew Gonzáles, Jason Gonzáles, Kyle Haley and Luke Dienlin. Honorary Pallbearers are Justin Gonzáles, Gabriel Martínez and Henry Harada.
The family asks that any donations be made to the Socorro Hospice Program, PO Box 1009, Socorro, NM 87801 to whom they are deeply indebted.
