Edward Charles Courtney came with his parents Owen Courtney (1806-1855) and Catherine Connolly (1806-1875) from Ireland and landed with his family in New York City on the ship Garrick on the 13th of Sept 1847.

They settled originally in North Hudson, Essex County, New York. Newspapers state Owen Courtney left North Hudson in 1854 and the rest of family moved on west to Oneida, Knox County, Illinois.

The three brothers, Edward C, George W and Michael Lewis all served in the Civil War.

The mother Catherine Connolly Courtney died ca 1875 and was buried probably in Saint Marys Cemetery, East Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois.
