A pioneer of California and a resident of Monterey since 1905 Mrs. Martha Bixby died at her horn at 517 Madison street last night at the age of 89. She had been in ill health for the past month.
The life of Mrs. Bixby was a chapter out of the pioneering days of the west. Born in Illinois in 1839 it was in the year 1864, when she was 25 year old, that she travelled across the plains, settling first in Mendocino county. Her next move was to Sonoma county, where she lived two years. Then she moved to the Salinas valley, where she married the late Charles H. Bixby.
The couple moved down the coast below Monterey, where B:xby bought a ranch. T here they stayed until 1905, when they came to Monterey to make their home.
Mrs. Bixby leaves two sisters and one brother residents of Napa county. Mrs. Charles Gregg, her daughter, lives in Monterey. She is survived by one son, George O. Bixby, who lives on the Molera Ranch in Toro. Two nieces survive Mrs. Ed Allen of Monterey and Mrs. Alice Parsons of King City. A nephew Thomas Fussell. lives in Monterey.
