Gilbert was born on June 24, 1929, the son of Otto and Ida (Erdman) Mettler in Mercer County, rural Beulah, ND. He was baptised at Kronthal Lutheran Church, Beulah. He was raised on the family farm northwest of Beulah. Gilbert was confirmed at the Peace Lutheran Church, northwest of Beulah.
On January 14, 1948, he enlisted into the United States Navy. While in the Navy, Gilbert was a Golden Glove Boxer. He proudly served his country until being honorably discharged December 19, 1951.
On April 18, 1950, he was united in marriage to Lillian Robinson in Yeadon, PA. To this union two children were born, Gilbert and Robert. On April 18, 1982, he married Charlene Grapin in Mason, PA. To this union a daughter, Audrey was born.
Gilbert worked for over 40 years for Boeing in the Research and Development department, retiring in June of 1993. He later returned to ND, living in Minot.
Gilbert was a member of the American Legion Post 355 for over 40 years, where he was Commander in 1978-1979. A past Chief DeGare of the LaSociete Des 40 Homes EQ & Chevaux-Local 927, Pennsylvania. As well as active in the VFW Post 25 in Upper Darby, PA. He was also a member of the Minot Moose Lodge.
Surviving relatives: Sons: Dr. Gilbert (Regina) Mettler Jr., Washington, NH, Robert Mettler, Philadelphia, PA; daughter Audrey Mettler, PA; granddaughter Katie Mettler, Philadelphia, PA: siblings: Agnes Wiedrich, Beulah, ND, Richard Mettler, International Falls, MN, Irene Blahna, Kensal, ND, Laverne (Neil) Dassey, Mishicot, WI, Leroy Mettler, Clarkson, WA, Veda Stellwagen, Oostberg, WI. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Rufina Zeller.
Visitation: Wednesday, August 20, 2008, from 2-5 at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Funeral Service: Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 10:30 am at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, located at 21 3rd Ave SW, Minot.
