He was raised and educated in Beulah. He met and married Cleo Hauck and moved to International Falls in 1963. Richard owned Dicks Liquor Store and worked as a welder at the local paper mill until retirement in 1988.
Richard enjoyed lake living and feeding his deer, ducks and chipmunks. He also loved dancing and especially enjoyed dancing to polka music.
Richard is survived by his son, Perry (Glenda) Mettler; daughter, Pamela (Wayne) Mathews; three grandchildren: Jeff, Jeremy and Jennifer (Brian) Lacher; three great-grandchildren; brother, LeRoy Mettler; sisters: Agnes Wiedrich, LaVern Dassey and Veda Stellwagon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Ida; two sisters, Rufina Zeller and Irene Blahna; and one brother, Gilbert Mettler.
Burial at the Beulah City Cemetery.
