Born "seven miles west of Lancaster," Pennsylvania, he was the son of Levi & Elizabeth (Houghentogler) Kneisley and stepson of Anna (Buffenmyers) Kneisly. In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, and stood 5' 3" tall with black hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of eighteen in Columbia, Lancaster County, July 31, 1862, mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 12 as a private with Co. K, 135th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 24, 1863. He is in the company register as "Nicely."
2. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Lancaster July 15, 1864, mustered into state service there July 18 as a private with Hebble's Independent Cavalry Militia, and honorably discharged with the unit October 29, 1864. He is in the roster as "Knisely."
3. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Lancaster and mustered into federal service at Lancaster March 7, 1865, as a private with Co. E, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 12, 1865, at Fairfax Seminary, Fairfax County, Virginia. He is in the company register as "Kniceley," but his organizational pension index spells it "Kneisley."

He married Leah Huber during February 1867 in Philadelphia and fathered Frank Huber (b. 06/19/67). He moved his family to Washington County, Maryland, shortly afterward where Leah died on June 19, 1869. He soon married Adaline Cover and fathered Virginia Belle (b. 06/27/70 - married William Henry Schlotterbeck), John Cover (b,. 01/09/72), Mary Louisa (b. 11/02/73), Susan Katherine (b. 12/10/75 - married Vernon O. Derr), Verna May (b. 02/13/79 - married James William Spigler), Minnie Mildred (b. 11/14/85 - married Harry Douglas LeFevre), and Daisy Irene (b. 11/18/82).He first married Leah H. Huber on Feb 14, 1867 & had a son and she then passed away in June 1869. He then married Adaline Mary Cover on Oct 16, 1869 and they had 7 children.

Joseph was the son of Levi & Elizabeth Houghentogler Kneisly. He was preceded in death by a half brother, John Kneisly & is survived by a half brother, Levi B. Kneisly & a sister, Annie H. Kneisley.

Joseph was a well known gardener & was engaged in selling & transporting produce & merch. between Hagerstown & Halfway. He passed from Bright's disease.
