Wife of Charles Franklin Stockwell, the first president of the Wesleyan Seminary of Albion, and mother of Madelon Stockwell Turner, the first woman admitted to the University of Michigan (1870). Louisa was the daughter of Paul Tenny and Eleanor (Thompson) Peabody, the first settlers of Albion (March, 1833). She married Stockwell on July 18,1844. The couple had one daughter, Madelon (1845-1924) who graduated from Albion in 1862 and from the University of Michigan in 1872. Charles head out west towards California via ship and the Isthmus of Panama, but died of a blood disease at sea between Panama and California on June 25, 1850 and was buried at sea. She then married physician Dr. William Henry Johnson (1816-1883) in 1852, and lived in Kalamazoo the rest of her life. Stockwell Memorial Library at Albion College is named in memory of Charles and Louisa (Peabody) Stockwell.
