Maggie Harris Curtis was born to Sallie and Joe Harris on July 26,1885 in North Carolina. She married Morris Sullivan Curtis. They produced 10 children which were 6 daughters and 4 sons. Morris worked at the Lake Tahoma Damn power generator for many years. He was the first man to work there. His family lived in a large white house near the base of the damn. Many of their grandchildren were born in that house. After the death of Morris, Maggie lived in several locations including appartments on Hwy 70. She was a beautiful woman with long hair that she wore in a bun on top of her head. She was extremely tall well close to 6 feet. In her elder years her health was poor due to diabetes. She slowly became blind. When she was no longer able to care for herself she moved into the home with her daughter, Gertie Poteat and family. She loved to read the Bible and as her sight prevented her from reading, her great grand-daughter read to her after school each day. Her hair eventually turned a beautiful silver white but continued to be long and wore in a bun. Each night she would take down her hair and comb it. She insisted on helping in the kitchen and often washed dishes. She was a gentle women who did not take to gossip. She enjoyed listening to television and radio preachers. She was buried beside Morris in what is now known as Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church Cemetery. Many of her children and grand-children are buried in the same cemetery. She was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, grand mother and great grand mother.
