Prominent pioneer businessman of Albion. David Peabody was born in Niagara, Canada, the son of Paul Tenney & Eleanor (Thompson) Peabody, the first settlers of Albion, Michigan (March, 1833 they came). With his brother Walter, David erected the large "Peabody Block" at the corner of Superior and Erie Sts. in downtown Albion in 1852. He also operated the "Peabody" or "Gothic" mill on S. Monroe St. It was David who built the beautiful home on the SW corner of S. Eaton and W. Erie Sts. That structure was demolished in 1966. David was married twice. His first wife Mary Ann Grosvenor m. 5/2/1846 died in 1854. She is buried in the Grosvenor family lot in the Old Grounds lot 101, along with some infant children, and their son George Grosvenor Peabody. There are numerous descendants from that marriage. Their daughter Mary Ann Grosvenor Peabody married William Mason Fitch (they lived in Cleveland, OH) and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit. David Peabody's 2nd wife was Augusta Pearl. They were married December 31, 1859. After David's death, she moved out to Denver, Colorado where there are descendants from that marriage today.
