Mary Louise McPherson Hackett was the third of three children born to John McPherson (1826-1886) and his wife Pamelia Allen (1820-1912). Her father was a native of Scotland who worked variously as a farmer, mason and school janitor in Port Huron, St. Clair Co., MI. Mary Louise graduated as valedictorian of her class of seven from Port Huron High School on June 24, 1880. For a few years afterwards she taught secondary school in the town. On Aug. 29, 1883 she married Fred Nathan Hackett (1861-1937) in Port Huron. (Fred was a distant cousin: his grandmother Everline Allen Rockwood was the elder sister of Mary Louise's mother, Pamelia Allen McPherson.) The couple moved to Detroit where Fred worked as a traveling salesman representing saddlery and leather goods companies. They raised three children: Ada Ruth (b. 1885), Lewis Frank (b. 1888), and Mildred (b. 1894). In December 1906 Mary Louise underwent surgery for cancer, but died shortly afterwards from a postoperative infection--all too common in the days before modern antiseptic medicine.
