Martha lived to be almost 73 and endured many trials. She survived a suicide attempt by her husband, four infants dying in infancy, and 2 adult children that committed suicide. Mabel, the daughter that committed suicide at age 35, was the mother of 11 children. Another son, Harry, died tragically in an elevator shaft accident. She also had at least two grandchildren that predeceased her. Their family was often described as destitute in the newspapers.
Her son, George W., married at least four times. For his second marriage, he married a woman the day after he met her. The party a week later ended with gunfire. Fortunately, nobody was injured but he spent a couple of months in jail.
Besides that, many children and grandchildren had scrapes with the law. Son William Spain was sentenced to two years in prison for burglary. (Sept. 1892)
