Knights Templar, Attention!
The Sir Knights of Santa Rosa Commandery, Knights Templar, are hereby requested to assemble at Masonic hall tomorrow (Monday) afternoon in full Templar uniform at 1:30 p.m., for the purpose of attending the funeral of our late frater, Sir Edward Neblett.

SANTA ROSA'S FIRST MAYOR IS SUMMONED BY DEATH

Hon. Edward Neblett Passes to His Reward Above

End of the Long and Eventful Career of an Honored and Respected Citizen Whom Everybody Highly Esteemed

Death has claimed Santa Rosa's first Mayor. Saturday night about half past seven o'clock the Hon. Edward Neblett closed his eyes on things temporal and his spirit passed to the enjoyment of life eternal. It was a peaceful release.

For weeks it was known that the pioneer would shortly gain the rest for which an abiding faith in the possibilities of a blessed hereafter had prepared for him. Towards the end, as the shadows lengthened, his last words were addressed, even when the power of recognition of those who ministered to him had failed, to the Savior whom he had learned to love and trust. He died at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hood, near Sebastopol, with whom he had made his home for sometime.

Mr. Neblett was one of the best known of the pioneers. His long life in California, extending over fifty years, and his connection with the early history of the state, had brought him into contact with hundreds of persons. He was a man of honor at all times and a lover of truth and justice. Everyone esteemed, yes loved him. In his declining years it was his great pleasure to recount the friendship borne to him. The funeral of Mr. Neblett will take place from Masonic hall tomorrow (Monday) afternoon at two o'clock under Masonic auspices. The members of Santa Rosa Commandery will form the escort of honor.

March 30, 1875 – Neblett's hardware store, with his partners, Stanley & Juilliard, on the corner of Main and Third Streets, Santa Rosa, Calif. – as viewed from the southeast.

In 1876, under the first city charter, Mr. Neblett(who was co-owner of a hardware store at Third and Main), was elected as Santa Rosa's first mayor, and served on the first official City Council with five other businessmen, which created a "businessman's council" that became the norm, with few exceptions, for the remainder of the 19th century and well into the 20th.

Previously, the city had been governed by a Board of Trustees.

Santa Rosa's first Mayor, Edward Neblett, died Saturday night(January 19, 1907) about half past seven o'clock, at 88 years of age, and was buried Monday afternoon(January 21, 1907) next to his wife who had passed away in 1898.

Santa Rosa Rural Cemetery Map - Located near the entrance at both walk-in gates(on Franklin & McDonald Ave), is a multi-colored map of the cemetery that indicates the various sections and plot numbers. Look for his grave to be at the east end of the Fulkerson section, in plot 22.

HONORED MAN IS NOW AT REST

Funeral of the Late Edward Neblett, First Mayor of Santa Rosa, on Monday Afternoon

With becoming respect to his memory and with many manifestations of sincere regret, the remains of the late Edward Neblett, Santa Rosa's first mayor, were laid to rest in Stanley's cemetery on Monday afternoon.

The funeral services were under the auspices of Santa Rosa Lodge, F. & A.M., and Worshipful Master E.R. Sawyer was the master of ceremonies. The Rev. William Martin, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, delivered an impressive eulogy based on the words of the Book of Proverbs: "A hoary head is a crown of glory, when worn with uprightness." He spoke of the deceased's unimpeachable uprightness and honor. Mention was made of his relation and devotion to the Presbyterian Church. In his address the minister also referred to the recent death of a lifelong friend of Mr. Neblett's, Squire Coulter. He closed with a fervent prayer.

A quartette composed of...rendered the hymns, Mrs. Minnie Mills presiding at the piano. The casket was covered with beautiful wreaths.

The Sir Knights of Santa Rosa Commandery, Knights Templar, in full Templar uniform, acted as escort for the cortege of their esteemed frater, under the command of Eminent Commander Sir D.J. Paddock. W.H. Goodman was the marshal of the Masonic parade.

At the cemetery, the committal services of the Masonic lodge was used...pall bearers were all old friends of the deceased. They were...
