Julia was the eleventh of twelve Children born to Charles Wesley Thomas Dickinson and Josephine W McManus. Her parents were both from pioneer Texas families.

Julia Elizabeth DICKINSON was the eleventh of twelve children born to Charles Wesley Thomas DICKINSON and his wife, Josephine Wright MCMANUS, both of whom were from pioneer Texas families.

Julia's father was the tenth of ten children (who grew to adulthood) born to Dr. Samuel Burling DICKINSON and Caroline Elizabeth KINNISON.

Julia, through her father and his father (Samuel Burling DICKINSON) was directly descended from four passengers who were aboard the Mayflower on her maiden voyage to America that arrived in Nov 1620 (John Howland, Elizabeth Tilley and Elizabeth 's parents).

Julia's paternal grandfather (Samuel Burling DICKINSON) is a qualifying ancestor for membership in the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, the John Howland Society, the Sons of the Republic of Texas , the Daughters of the Republic of Texas , and Texas First Families.Julia is a direct descendant from the passengers of the maiden voyage of the Mayflower.

The portrait at the upper right is of Julia Elizabeth Dickinson Cane (1905-1989) who was the eleventh of twelve known children born to Charles Wesley Thomas Dickinson and his wife, Josephine Wright McManus. It is believed to have been taken c1927 when Julia was serving as interim director of the San Antonio YMCA after having earned her B.S. degree in physical education from Battle Creek (Michigan) College. While Julia was in Michigan, she was employed by the Kellogg family as a tutor for some of their children.

Julia was married to Joel Cane, a Dutch concert musician. They met when she was in Michigan where he was a member of a concert orchestra there. Julia and Joel were the parents of two sons, Bernard "Barney" Cane (1933-2011) and Andries "Andy" Cane (1935- ).

The portrait is from Julia's collection, now owned by her granddaughter, Kathleen Cane, who lives in San Antonio, Texas. SAN ANTONIO GIRL EXHIBITS WITH U.S. OLYMPIC SWIMMERS

Miss Julia Dickinson, a San Antonio girl who, three summers ago, did not know how to swim, is now travelling with a squad of American Olympic team swimmers and divers touring the Middle West giving demonstrations. Miss Dickinson, a graduate of Main Avenue High School here last June, is studying at the Kellogg College of Physical Education. She recently appeared with the American Olympic swimmers and divers in a demonstration at the Illinois Athletic Club, Chicago, perhaps the most active organization in aquatics in the country. She is to appear in the same company at the Edgewater Beach hotel, Chicago , in a few days. Miss Dickinson will be remembered as having taught swimming here last summer at the San Antonio country Club. She mastered swimming and diving in three summers under the coaching of Miss Edith K. Jimison, director of physical education at the San Antonio Y.M.C.A.

Y.W.C.A. OFFICIAL WILL TOUR WEST

Upon the departure of Miss Lillian Mallory of the Y.W.C.A. for Oregon , Wash. , and California Friday, where she will spend a two month's vacation, Miss Julia Dickinson of Battle Creek , Mich. , will take her place as physical director of the Y.W.C.A. Miss Dickinson is majoring in physical education at a college in Battle Creek.

Julia received her B.S. degree from Battle Creek College in Battle Creek, Michigan. She is working on her M.B. degree at Incarnate Word College (now Incarnate Word University), in San Antonio, Texas. She is a biology teacher. Her interests are horseback riding, swimming, and fishing.
