Unfortunately, after giving birth to their forth child, Harriet died. Without a wife to keep the home, William moved into his mother-in-law's house with three of his children. The impact of war would influence the lives of their families for generations.
He eventually moved to Missouri where he remarried. He can be found with his second wife in the 1900 census, still reported as a locomotive engineer. This is where he remains today.
It is said that he completely lost his mind in his last few years.
