TUPELO – Martis Donald "Marty" Ramage Jr., 54, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, at his home in Tupelo. Marty had fought cancer courageously the last five years and died suddenly of a massive heart attack. Born in Tupelo on Oct. 6, 1957, to Helen Estes Ramage and Martis D. "Buddy" Ramage Sr., Marty was educated in the public schools of Lee County and graduated from Nettleton High School in 1976. After graduating from Itawamba Community College, he attended his beloved University of Mississippi where he received his BBA degree in Banking and Finance. He later graduated from the Mid South School of Banking and the BAI School of Bank Operations and Technology at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Marty's professional career included over 30 years with Renasant Bank. (People's Bank and Trust) where he served in many capacities. At his death, he was Division Vice President in Treasury Management and had served as state president of the American Institute of Banking in 1996-1997.

Marty was one of the country's most avid Ole Miss Rebel fans. Active in local, district and statewide Ole Miss Alumni Associations, his Rebel memorabilia collection is among the best anywhere. Marty was an active and passionate community leader and philanthropist.

He was a stellar local historian and author of several books including the definitive history of the Tupelo Tornado of 1936. A longtime supporter and officer of the North Mississippi Historical and Genealogical Society, he also was affiliated with Sons of the American Revolution and the Sons of the Confederacy. Marty was currently on the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Department by the Governor's appointment.

He is a past member of the Itawamba Community College Board, the ICC Development Foundation and former Alumnus of the Year. A staunch believer in the power of reading and learning, Marty is a longtime director of Friends of the Lee County Library and a former member of the Library Board. A Mason and Shriner, Marty was a member of Tupelo Lodge 318. He believed in services for citizens with disabilities as was evidenced by his longtime membership on the Board of Directors of the Regional Rehabilitation Center in Tupelo. He was an honorary Kentucky and Alabama Colonel. Marty was a longtime member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he served as an elder. He enjoyed countless hundreds of friends statewide and his love of good storytelling and mischievous revelry will remain legendary for years. As an only child, he was wholly committed and dedicated to his late father, Buddy, and his mother, Helen.

A service celebrating his life will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011. at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with his pastor, Rev. Ray Morton, officiating. Rep. Steve Holland and CEO Robyn McGraw will deliver personal and professional reflections. Private entombment will follow in the Chapel of Faith Mausoleum in Lee Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today and from 1 p.m. to service time on Thursday at the Tupelo Chapel. Condolences may be emailed to

He was preceded in death by his father, Buddy Ramage, on July 25, 2011; his uncles, Bruce Ramage and Pete Estes; and his cousins, Tim Estes and Austin Taylor Estes. Pallbearers will be Jerry Iverson, John Letteri, Brad Riley, Chris Riley, Randy Ramage, and Greg Pirkle. Honorary pallbearers will be fellow associates at Renasant Bank, George Putnam, Jerry McKee, and Larry Johnson.
