GEORGIA - J. Lincoln DeVillier, PhD., age 95, of N. Lakeshore Dr., Carrollton, GA passed away Saturday, November 19, 2011.

Dr. DeVillier was born in Leonville, LA on January 20, 1916, the son of the late Adam Cleveland DeVillier and Elizabeth Wyble DeVillier. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army where he served during WW II and the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his daughter, Anne E. DeVillier of Temple, niece, Mary Martha Mann of Carrollton, brothers and sister, Albert Berchman DeVillier of Hattiesburg, MS, James Richard of Houston, TX, Rebecca Jane DeVillier Sylvester of Opelousas, LA, Joseph Claude DeVillier of Castro Valley, CA, and John DeVillier of Las Vegas, NV.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Mary Anne Goreau DeVillier, brothers, Leon Fabian DeVillier, Adam Floyd DeVillier, Leo Sherman DeVillier; sisters, Myrtle Marie DeVillier Daspit, Anna Lee DeVillier Vidrine, Shirley Mae DeVillier Sprotti, and Gertrude Beryl DeVillier Fontenot.

He retired as a professor at the University of West Georgia in the school of Business where he taught for 12 years. Dr. J. Lincoln DeVillier, Professor Emeritus of Accounting and Finance, Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve Retired, overcame the adversity of the great depression. He dropped out of school in the 9th grade, joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, became an expert typist, promoted to Assistant Leader and then Leader, held the position of Company Clerk until he left the CCC's; he was drafted into the Army in June of 1941 and was immediately assigned to a Corps Headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida. In his military career he held the following ranks in this order: Private, Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, 2nd Lieutenant, 1st Lieutenant, Master Sergeant, Warrant Officer, Captain, Major, and LL Colonel. He retired from the Army as a Lt. Colonel in January 1976. In 1954 he enrolled as a freshman at age 38 in college, received a BA degree in 3 years, graduating 2nd in a class of 232; earned a masters degree from Tulane University in 1958 and a PhD. from Louisiana State University in 1967, at which time he came to West Georgia College to teach in the School of Business. He retired in 1979. After retiring he was active in volunteer work in the community and an active member of the Carrollton Kiwanis Club, American Legion Post 143 Honor Guard, Knights of Columbus, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

With the Fourth Infantry Division in Germany, Second Lieutenant John Lincoln DeVillier was wounded in action while serving with this division, has been awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action. A tank platoon leader in the 70th Tank Battalion, Lieutenant DeVillier received the following citation for bravery in the vicinity of Schevenhutte, Germany in November 17, 1944. At a time when the enemy was subjecting the surrounding area to concentrated mortar fire, Lieutenant DeVillier left a covered position to go to the assistance of several members of his tank crew who had been wounded. At great risk he made his way across terrain in which the enemy was known to have planted an abundance of anti- personnel mines. He reached the casualties and was administering first aid when the enemy directed another concentration of mortar fire upon the area. Displaying an extreme spirit of self sacrifice, he placed himself in such a position as to shield the wounded men with his body. In so doing, he protected the casualties from further injury but was wounded himself. Lieutenant DeVillier's heroic actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service. Lieutenant DeVillier recuperated and returned to duty.

A Funeral Mass will be conducted Wednesday, November 23 at 10 A. M. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Father Rafael Carballo officiating.

Pallbearers will be Joe Bell, Roy Bogue, Jim Carter, Jim Collins, Dave Dugan, Bob Graft, Dan Lewis, and Tim Warren. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Kiwanis Club and Knights of Columbus.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 p. m. until 8 p.m. with a Rosary held at 7 p. m. Memorial contributions may be made to the DeVillier's Family Trust Fund Scholarship or one's favorite charity.

Interment will be in the church cemetery with full military honors.
