Joseph M. Burns, age 88, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on Sunday November 20, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Wilmington, DE he was the son of the late Michael J. and Margaret Desmond Burns. Mr. Burns retired in 1986 after 44 years as a traffic specialist for Hercules Inc. A member of St. John the Beloved Church, he was a past secretary and treasurer of the Wilmington Transportation Club. He was also a member of the Italian-American Club of Kennett Sq., PA and the Salesianum Alumni Association. Mr. Burns also served on the Board of Directors of the CYO of Wilmington, DE. A U.S. Army veteran of WWII he proudly served our country as a Chaplain's assistant and was a member of the American Legion Post #27.

Mr. Burns is survived by his son: Michael Burns, daughters: Beth Andrews (Bruce) and Ann Marie Kerstetter (Thomas), 4 grandchildren: Marjorie Burns-Roberts, Thomas Rogers, Alex and Brittany Andrews. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Catherine Nilan Burns who passed away in 2008, brothers: Francis X. and Paul J. Burns.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday November 26th at 10:30am at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown, Rd. Sherwood Park. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick's Cemetery, Kennett Sq., PA.

Relatives and friends may visit on Saturday November 26th from 9:00 to 10:00am at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Burns to the Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Rd., Clayton Bldg. Suite #100, Wilmington, DE 19810.
