William Jeremiah Lowney was born May 16, 1890 in Butte, Montana to Dennis Lowney and Catherine Wholey. He was the oldest son born of this marriage. William Jeremiah Lowney married Dorothy Kaufmann and remained in the Butte, Montana area where he had children of his own. William Lowney operated the steam plant that provided steam heat to many of the buildings in uptown Butte. The city block where his steam plant operated was later buried and the Montana Standard would purchase the property after his death in 1953. The Montana Standard sits on the block once occupied by the steam plant. It is referred to as the "Lowney block". William Lowney passed away while hunting on Oct. 15, 1953 near Fleser Mountain.
