George was the oldest of four children born to Morgan A. and Margaret Carolina 'Peggy' (Moose) Walker. He married Augusta Barnhardt in 1885 and they were the parents of four children: Oscar Thurmond, Myrtie M., George Horace Jr. and Thelma Elizabeth.
