Stephen was the son of Johann Zywicki and Catharina Peplinski. He was born in Kalish, Poland in 1852. He served one year in the Prussian Army. Military service was mandatory. He spoke both Polish and German, was Catholic and was a farmer for most of his life.

He came to America in 1879 with his wife and first child, Stephen Jr. The rest of his children were born here.
