Emery was the first child of William and Emma Weller Young’s large family. As a young boy, he loved to run barefoot through the hills and woods of his beloved southern Indiana and enjoyed spending time at his grandmother’s house nearby. Years later he would tell his grandchildren of the fun he had playing near Little Pigeon creek where he often found Indian arrowheads. Their home was near the Lincoln homestead and he no doubt played, hunted and fished in some of the same places young Abraham Lincoln a century before. Still young when he left home in search of adventure, Emery hopped trains and saw much of the country by rail in the early 1920’s. He returned to Indiana where worked for awhile as a hospital orderly. It was here that he met a pretty, brown-eyed, dark haired young nurse’s aide named Clara. They married in the spring of 1923 and raised a family of 10 children born between 1924 and 1945. During the depression, Emery provided for his ever growing family by working as a meat cutter for Kingins (later Hygrade) meat packing company in Indianapolis. He also raised chickens, pigs, had cows for milk and each year planted a huge vegetable garden. Emery was a strong but humble man who wanted very little for himself and was always thinking of the welfare of his loved ones. He had a very dry sense of humor, an amazing sense of direction, was a crack shot, and very tender hearted. His biggest joys in life were his wife Clara, his children, grandchildren and watching the antics of toddlers. He was a very unpretentious person and without a doubt, someone you could depend on.
