Gildria Jalett Carter LaMays (affectionately known as Butchie) was born on August 31, 1946 in Los Angeles, California to the late Lillie Mae Ball Cater and Sharpper Carter. She was the third of eight siblings.

In 1957 after the death of her mother Lillie, Butchie and her seven brothers and sisters went to live her mother oldest sister Susan and her husband William. Susan and William loved the children and became the mother and father they needed.

Butchie received his education in the Compton Unified School District, attended Longfellow Elementary, Enterprise JHS, and she graduated from Compton High School where she received the Kerb Alpert's Scholarship in music. She had a beautiful voice and was known for her rendition of the Lord Prayer.

Susan and William being Christians, reared Butchie and her siblings using the teachings of Jesus Christ. Butchie accepted the lord at an early age, joining Good Faith MBC where she was baptized.

At a young age Butchie met and for a short period of time was married to Andrew Coates. In 1975 she met her soul mate Roy LeMays and in 1976 they were married They were happily married until a tragic accident at work took his life.

Butchie was a healthy life style enthusiast. She walked in the Los Angeles Marathon. She believed in the benefits of vitamins and minerals and encouraged everyone to do the same.
Butchie worked for a laboratory for 20 years where she was a supervisor.

Buthie's greatest desire was to preserve the love and unity of the family. She open her home to three of her grandchildren.

When her cousin Cornelius became ill and the family joined together to lift her up in prayer. Butchie saw it as an opportunity to bring her family closer together and to the Lord. She became the leader of the five o'clock Sunday prayer-call. She would faithfully call family and friends on Saturday night and Sunday morning reminding them to call in at five o'clock for Sunday prayer.

The time has come for my departure: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord the Righteous judge will award me on that day.

On Friday, November 18th, 2011 Gildria received her wings and flew home to be with the Lord.

SHE WILL BE DEEPLY MISSED.

WE LOVE YOU MOM

We do not need a special day,
to bring you to our minds.
The days we do not think of you,
are very hard to find.

Our hearts still ache with sadness,
and secret tears still flow.
What it meant to lose you,
no one will ever know.

There will always be a heartache,
and often a silent tear.
But always a precious memory,
of the days when you were here.

Mom, so many images come to mind,
whenever I speak your name.
It seems without you in my life,
things just will not seem the same.

What happened to those lazy days,
when I was just a child...
when my life was consumed by you,
in your love and in your smile.

What happened to all those times,
when I always looked to you...
no matter what happened in my life,
you could make the gray skies blue.

Mom, some days I hear your voice
and turn to see your face,
yet in my turning it seems,
the sound has been erased.

Mom, who will I turn to for answers,
when life does not make sense...
who will be there to hold me close,
when the pieces just don't fit.

Oh Mom, if I could turn back time,
and once more hear your voice,
I'd tell you that out of all the Moms,
you still would be my choice.

Please always know I love you,
and no one can take your place...
years may come and go,
but your memory will never be erased.

Today, Jesus, as you are listening,
in your home above,
would you go and find my Mom...
and give her all my love!
